What to do when you feel discouraged as a writer…
It think it depends on why I’m feeling discouraged. Is my story not coming together? Did I just read a rather scathing email from a reader? Has it been a busy week and I haven’t had time to write? I attack all of these problems differently, but I think one of the key ingredients to every solution is surrounding myself with encouraging friends. I feel so very fortunate to have such a wonderful support system in my friends and family. They remind me that in the big scheme of things, one bad day won’t ruin everything.
I often go for a walk when my story isn’t coming together the way I’d like. Sometimes getting fresh air and taking time to sort through my ideas helps. Oh, and showering! Writers are notorious for getting ideas in the shower. I’m no exception.
Finally, sometimes I need a break from writing. Time away from my stories helps me clear my head and refocus. Going out to dinner with my friends – most of whom are not writers – gives me a chance to hear about their lives and forget my own. Playing with my kids, or seeing a movie with them, gives me a chance to laugh and remember that life – and writing – is about joy. I don’t want to be the stereotypical writer who torments herself in order to get a story out. Writing isn’t always easy, but it should be a good experience. Nothing good comes from forcing something, writing included.
Look out for our review, which will be up soon.
