Interview with Anna Wilson – Author of I’m a Chicken Get Me Out of Here

I’m delighted to welcome Anna Wilson to Bookbabblers as our July author in residence. I am a huge fan of Anna’s books and reviewed The Smug Pug earlier this year. Anna’s latest book ‘I’m a Chicken Get me Out of Here!’ is out on the 1st August and we’ll be reviewing it later this month. In the meantime, here is our interview with Anna…

Please tell us a little about yourself
My name is Anna Wilson. I have been a writer for as long as I can remember, but have been a published writer for the past fifteen years. I started writing as soon as I could string a few words together, scribbling in the large desk diaries my grandfather gave me to keep me quiet when I came to stay. I live in the south west of England with my husband, two children, two cats, six chickens and one dog.

Where do you find the inspiration for your books?
Inspiration comes from everywhere and anywhere! I write about my animals, I write about my family and I write about my friends. Sometimes I write about things I have heard on the bus. Writers are terrible eavesdroppers and snatchers of other people’s stories. I listen, I watch and I write it all down. The book I have just finished writing was inspired by a family holiday to Botswana. We met a man called Bibi who was a wonderful storyteller. I listened to everything he said and wrote it down in a diary. Some of those stories have found their way into my next book.

What are you working on now?
I have just finished a book for young readers which is the sequel to Monkey Business, a book I wrote about six years ago. This new one is going to be called Monkey Madness and features Felix and his uncle Zed who were in Monkey Business. This time they go to Botswana on safari and get into all sorts of scrapes. I hope readers will like it as much as they have told me they like Monkey Business.

Do you have any tips for young aspiring writers?
Just do it! Don’t sit around dreaming of becoming a writer – pick up a pen and some paper, or turn on a computer and get started right away. Don’t worry about what to write. Start with something simple. Write about your favourite food, a holiday you loved, the way that person is staring at you from the front of the bus, what it feels like to sink your toes into warm sand, how you hate your mum’s spaghetti Bolognese. Any of those things could lead on to writing an amazing story. It doesn’t matter what you write about, but you have to write something, or you’ll never be a writer.

What do you like to do outside of writing?
I love swimming in the cold Cornish sea or in the river near where I live. I love to run. I run most days. It helps me relax and sometimes I sort out a knotty writing problem while I am running. I love to read. I also quite like sleeping.

What was your favourite childhood book?
It has to be The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C S Lewis. Although my overall favourite author was Roald Dahl.
