Lovely, Dark and Deep s an outstanding novel from debut author Amy McNamara. It follows Wren Wells as she struggles to come to terms with the death of her boyfriend Patrick in a car crash, in which she was also injured.
Wren moves to live with her father in a small rural town in Maine. She puts her plans to go to college to one side as she struggles by each day. An unexpected meeting leads her to Cal Owen who is nursing problems of his own and who has also put college on hold. Wren has worked hard to be isolated, but as her friendship with Cal develops she wonders if she can really allow herself to get close to someone again.
I loved the setting of this story and I felt that the weather elements, such as the heavy snow and nearby ocean gave the book a new dimension. The use of peotry in the storyline (mainly Philip Larkin) also gave an emotive edge to Wren and helped the reader to understand how she was feeling.
This novel is mesmerising, it pulls you into the heart of the story and doesn’t want to let you go. I really loved reading it and didn’t want to put it down.
Highly recommended, but have some tissues ready! I am looking forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to Simon and Schuster for sending me a copy to review.
