Mary Hooper is one of my favourite historical fiction authors’, so I was thrilled to receive a copy of her latest book Poppy which is set during the first world war.
Poppy is a parlour maid for the de Vere family. When war outbreaks, she decides, with the help of a family acquaintance, to train as a nurse and leave domestic service. Poppy is excited about her new role, but feels anxious about leaving the place she knows so well.
As Poppy gains experience as a nurse and starts to adjust to her new life, she also worries about those she has left behind. Everyday the list of deaths gets longer and longer and Poppy hangs on to hope that her own soldier will stay safe. I thought that Poppy was a fantastic heroine who seems to take everything in her stride.
This is a brilliant read with a real cliffhanger ending. I am desperate to read the sequel.
Thank you to Bloomsbury for sending us a copy to review.
