Quick, Slow, Mango! – Anik McGrory

This is a picture story book about 2 animals – one a baby elephant called Kidogo who takes his time and observes everything around him and one a baby monkey called PolePole who likes to do everything in a hurry. (PolePole means slowly and Kidogo means little in Swahili.)

The story starts at breakfast when Kidogo is being told by his Mum to hurry and have a drink but he is too busy looking at a butterfly, a stick and saying hello to a snail. Meanwhile PolePole is being told to slow down by her Mum as she runs through the grass. They meet up after PolePole has fallen into the river whilst trying to grab mangoes and Kidogo helps him slowly catch all the mangoes.

It is a good message for children that they sometimes you can go fast and sometimes you can slow in life and ends with the lovely line ‘…. sometimes slowly, slowly finds a friend.’

The book is nicely illustrated with lots of pictures to keep the younger reader amused and is also suitable for early readers. It is already a firm favourite in my house where one of my children is a ‘slowly, slowly’ and one is a ‘hurry, hurry’ type.

Thanks, Wendy, and thanks to Bloomsbury Children’s Books for sending us a copy.
