Barney the Boat Dog: Very Brave Dog – Linda Newbery

Little dog Barney lives on a narrowboat with his owner, Jim. The pair are inseparable – until they get separated. Barney loves his life on the canals but the one thing he’s frightened of is tunnels. So when Jim sets off into a tunnel without him, Barney is distraught. Luckily, another boat owner gives him a ride through the tunnel. When he gets to the other end Jim’s boat is moored up – but Jim isn’t on it! And in their efforts to be reunited, man and dog just keep missing each other until poor Barney is completely worn out. However, finally brave dog Barney has to overcome his fear and enter the nasty tunnel – alone.

Barney is a dog who has lived with his owner Jim on their narrow-boat Whistling Jack ever since Jim’s wife Annie died. But when Jim accidentally goes off in their narrow-boat without him Barney is distressed. So he decides to set off in another boat through the tunnel to find Jim.

My favourite character is Barney because he’s very brave.  Even though he is afraid of tunnels he tries to swim through the longest one which lasts for over 800 metres.

If you like adventure stories about dogs this is probably a book for you. I would recommend it to children aged 6-8, but children aged 5 could have it read to them.

Thanks, Bethan, and thanks to Usborne Children’s Books for sending us a copy.
